Bringing together the work of avant-garde fashion designers from the 1980s to the present, this exhibition illustrates a uniquely Japanese aesthetic known as iki, displaying garments with the defining characteristics of minimalist lines, deconstructed detailing and a fusing of traditional and cutting-edge techniques. Curator Akiko Fukai, director of the Kyoto Costume Institute, has assembled garments from big names such as Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto and Junya Watanabe, alongside radical up-and-comers including Fumito Ganryu and Mintdesigns
